TURBULENCE with PEK / BOB MOORES / ERIC DAHLMAN / DUANE REED – Updraft Intensity (Evil Clown 9280; USA) Featuring PEK on clarinets, alto & tenor saxes, flutes, double reeds, theremin, synths & a vast assortment of percussion, Bob Moores on trumpets, flugelhorn, efx, synths & percussion, Eric Dahlman on trumpet, wood flute, chimes Moog & Prophet synths and Duane Reed on bari horn, assorted percussion, etc. Turbulence is one of a half dozen different Leap of faith offshoot projects. Turbulence has a dozen discs so far going back 5 or so years, the personnel has changed over the years with PEK, Bob Moores and Eric Dahlman as the 3 most constant members. Recorded & Livestreamed for YouTube at Evil Clown Headquarters in August of 2021. Commencing with some Tuvan-like overtone chanting and didjeradoo-like drones, soon we enter a techno-like synth groove which sounds a bit like Tangerine Dream or one of those other Krautrock synth greats (Ash Ra Temple?!?). I formed Turbulence in 2015 as I started to assemble players for the Leap of Faith Orchestra. Turbulence, the extended horn section for the Orchestra (along with guests on other instruments), also records and performs as an independent unit. As if this writing in May of 2021, we have recorded over 30 albums on Evil Clown with greatly varied ensembles. All the smaller Evil Clown bands are really more about a general approach, rather than a specific set of musicians. A session gets credited to Turbulence when it is mostly horn players and the only musician on all of them is me. The sessions range from an early duet with Steve Norton and me (Vortex Generation Mechanisms) to a 5-horn band with bass and two percussionists (Encryption Schemes) to four albums by the side project Turbulence Doom Choir which feature myself, multiple tubas, percussion, electronics, and signal processing and many other configurations.
I opened Evil Clown Headquarters in mid-May to players that have been fully vaccinated. Horn players can’t really wear a mask, so there was no way to do ECH studio sessions inside during the stupid CV. There has been some shifting in the roster with some players no longer available and some players returning after a period of absence. This set was originally scheduled as a quintet with me, Bob Moores & Eric Dahlman (trumpets), Duane Reed (baritone horn) and the addition of the amazing trombonist Kat Dobbins. I was looking forward to this instrumentation which would have been a brass quartet with my horns. I was planning no electronics. Kat recently had a baby (Congrats Kat!) and the arrival of the D variant caused her to postpone her participation with Evil Clown projects despite my full vaccination requirement. Of course, we wish her well and respect her decision to exercise caution, but I had to rethink the approach to this set.
A while back, Bob and I did a Turbulence duet with a lot of electronics, and we have also used electronics a lot together in Metal Chaos Ensemble and some of the other Turbulence recordings.
