Raqib Hassan was a giant on the scene when I arrived in Boston. He had studied with Archie Shepp and had a wonderfully deep tenor sax sound. He performed a few times with Sun Ra. He also played other woodwind instruments including musette. He led both small and large ensembles which were more rooted in jazz than most units I have ever played with (typically more improv with fewer jazz elements). He loved a big percussion session and some of the Ensemble Mogra sets had 3 drummers and percussion. He was an early mentor of mine. I recorded some the shows I played on to DAT tape and when Raqib passed a while back, before I restarted Evil Clown in 2015, I got permission from his brother to make the recordings I made available.
