Expansions (1994) was my first graphic score for a large improvisation ensemble and is the direct predecessor of my 6 scores for the Leap of Faith Orchestra performed after the Leap of Faith 2015 reboot and before the pandemic. I worked for nearly two years on this score and the preparations for this performance… Since the show was immensely artistically successful, I thought I would do more of these in the 90s, but gradually I realized that I preferred to work in a pure improvisation setting with smaller units which was much less work. When I resumed musical activity, I decided that I wanted to revisit scored performances for large improvisation orchestras, but I eliminated the limited notated melodic information and specified everything with graphic symbols on a timeline so that the works could be performed without the need for extensive rehearsals.
