LEAP OF FAITH with PEK / GLYNIS LOMON / BOB MOORES – Imaginary Perspectives (Evil Clown 9273; USA) Featuring PEK on clarinets, saxes, flute, oboe, gongs, bells and assorted percussion; Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonic & voice and Bob Moores on trumpets, guitarron, Prophet synth and assorted percussion. It’s been a year since the ever-prolific Evil Clown label has released a new disc from their main band Leap of Faith. Due to the pandemic/close-down era, Dave PEK worked on and released nearly two dozen solo PEK projects/discs. I am glad they are back since Leap of Faith are/is the best and most enduring of the half dozen other projects that PEK is involved with. For this disc, the version of Leap of Faith is just a trio with two founding members, PEK and Glynis Lomon (mostly cello) plus a newer member, Bob Moores (mostly trumpets), who is already an established member of the Evil Clown empire and is found on some two dozen discs.

   One of the things I like most about Leap of faith is that their music often sounds cinematic, three dimensional, like walking in an African or South American jungle with animal, insects and natural sounds floating around us. All three members of Leap of Faith play some sort of percussion instrument or at least an aquasonic (bowed or plucked vase), hence there is often a layer or two of percussive sounds: drums, gongs, cymbals, bells, chimes, crotales, xylophone, glockenspiel and much more. This disc starts with some solemn ritualistic percussion. PEK has also become a great producer, the balance, warmth, and organic diversity is quite special. The trumpet and cello eventually enter and take their time to express themselves. Even when Leap of Faith strip things down, their music is still evocative, fascinating. At one point, Mr. Moores takes a soft, solemn, lonely sounding trumpet solo, rather like a candle burning in the dark providing the only light. Haunting, with Ms. Lomon’s somber, plucked or bowed cello rumbling underneath. Following the trumpet, PEK comes in on clarinet, again taking his time with a long, slowly unfolding solo with rustling cello and shaken bells underneath. Much of the percussion is recorded close mic’d so that it sounds like the musicians are right next to us in the same space. Throughout this long 70 minute disc, the sound is most haunting, hypnotic and engaging.
