Excerpt From Liner Notes by PEK

“… This recording was well rehearsed and well-performed. My concept at that time was already a bit chaotic, but was far more grove oriented than today, although I used some strange meters to mess things up. I remember being psyched at the time to have Dan Purcell on the session – He was a year ahead of me in high school and was the star of the jazz band – a great young trombonist. He was also great high school friends with me and my best friend Rob Slimy Rat Bastard Hansel. This may be one of the first times I used real recording studio technology to record a composition of mine.…”

Notes by PEK

A few months back, I had a reunion session with Jim Smith and Dave Murray. We played in a band called the Fabulous Weiners in the early 80s. See the Evil Clown Album page for details and links: https://evilclown.rocks/fabulous-weiners/

I’ve been thinking a bit about those early times in my music career since they came, so I dug through my hard drives and found the one that has the digitized files of my early work from 84 to 92. Most of it is not well recorded, but there are some studio sessions and some things well better recorded by Space on a 4-channel Reel to Reel recorder.

In California, I wrote some compositions that actually involved putting dots on the page. Some were songs I cowrote with Jim Smith for the Fabulous Weiners and a few were pieces that I did various times with Space and others. I worked on The Safety Device about a year before I left California and this recording was made on January 14, 1989 about 8 months before I left.

This recording was well rehearsed and well-performed. This may be one of the first times I used real recording studio technology to record a composition of mine.

I don’t have video from this period, but I will post a static image with the Audio on YouTube for this and future posts from the Deep Archive.
